My have things changed since 2008, right? When I started PIPM it was a place for me to share my random thoughts and purchases. I think I still follow that formula to an extent, but some things have definitely gotten better. Take the pictures for instance … wow, there used to be some really bad pictures up in here. I’m not talking bad lighting or bad editing, I’m talking some downright terrible pictures. What an interesting ride it’s been and I hope that if some of you are just starting out you can take some tidbits from the 5 tips to new bloggers I am going to share below:
One– Be yourself. Trust me, there are enough carbon copy people out there that offer no additional value other than wearing cute outfits. What will make you different? What do you bring to the table different than everyone else? If you’re funny, use that to your advantage. If you are in a unique profession, use that to your advantage. Be yourself on stories and don’t feel like you need to keep up with the Joneses, per se.
Two– Find like minded people and engage with their content. How is anyone ever going to know you if you don’t make yourself known? Get on IG for 30 minutes a night and just engage with other people in similar niches as you. Send people DM’s and tell them that you think they’re doing awesome things. Ultimately, it would be great if you can find people who live in your city and you all can meet up and exchange ideas.
Three– When you are first starting out it’s wise to hire someone to set up your website for you. Make sure it looks like you want it to look and all of the links and tabs work. It’s also wise to buy a Lightroom preset from someone (seriously everyone is selling them these days) and start using that on all of your pictures so everything is cohesive. Find something that you truly like and will be unique to you, so that when people see that picture they automatically think, “oh, that’s a Megan picture”.
Four– Don’t get discouraged. Listen, it’s taken me over 10 years to even somewhat feel like I am doing okay at this. Don’t expect success overnight. You need to put in the initial work and good things will come. People will notice your amazing content and you will gain traction. However, you can’t just expect to start a blog and IG and immediately begin to get brand deals. It takes a lot of time, networking, nurturing relationships, and outreach.
Five– Focus on YOU. This is so hard, even for me, because I am always noticing what other people are doing, wearing, traveling, etc. and I can’t help but think, “ugh, why can’t I do that”. But thinking that way will get you nowhere and it’s actually counterproductive to being successful yourself. Focus on YOUR content and your blog and how you can grow and go make it happen.
And now let’s take a trip down memory lane and find some of my first photos that I used on the blog over 10 years ago.
