I have to admit that this is the first time we’ve gotten professional holiday photos in several years. I don’t know why, but this time of the year tends to be so busy and taking holiday card pictures seems to always be the last thing on my mind. Every year I see people’s adorable photos as they post them on social media or their cards start rolling in the mail. This year I made it my goal to actually make time to thoughtfully pick out outfits and get some cute pictures taken. I know picking out what to wear can be stressful any day of the week, not to mention for a card that will be going out to tons of people. I have just a few simple rules to keep it simple and classic for your holiday card outfits!
Holiday Colors– To me, you can never go wrong with the traditional holiday colors of green and red. I got a cute subtle green tartan dress and decided to throw on a red scarf to make it a little more festive. Ideally, I would have gotten Rob a red sweater to wear over his pale blue collared shirt, but I didn’t have time. If you have kids or pets try to match their clothes as well. As you can see here Apple is wearing a festive red dog sweater, but poor Ding Ding has such a weird body shape and no dog clothes fit her- LOL.
Keep it Simple– You want to be able to look at these photos years from now and perhaps get them printed and framed for your home, so try to avoid wearing super trendy items like crazy poofy fur items or the latest and greatest fashion craze. As far as men’s fashion goes, I’d suggest a collared shirt and jeans and maybe a sweater or sweater vest. I’d also avoid wearing tons of statement jewelry. You all know I love my statement jewelry as much as the next gal, but it really can be distracting in family photos.
Comfy & Classic Footwear– Rob and I are both wearing shoes by Rockport from Zappos. I have honestly never worn a pair of booties that were more comfortable than these Rockport Total Motion Booties. Rob is also wearing a pair of Rockport Total Motion shoes and he said they were like walking on air. The Rockport Total Motion line features cushioned footbeds and are built for anything that might come up- from an important meeting to a spontaneous walk through the park (like these photos). As always, we love using Zappos because of their fast, free shipping, a 365-day return policy, and world class customer service, which fits perfectly in the busy lifestyle of the modern woman and man.
Outside Location– I think this one is a given, but head somewhere outside like a park or flower nursery for your family photos. We chose a cool little park that has an old house and old trains on the property, but I also think places like Millstone Nursery or downtown near the big Christmas tree would make great locations for photos. Anywhere that has fall foliage or any sort of Christmas decorations will be perfect for your photoshoot!
So tell me, where have you all had family photos taken in the past?
