We arrived in a sunny NYC for Fashion Week February 2018, but don’t be fooled … the theme of the weekend was rain, rain, and more rain! I tried to have an optimistic outlook despite the crappy weather, reminding myself to make the best out of the situation. We had a packed weekend planned and I wasn’t going to let the rain get me down! Here are some highlights from FW2018 in a “behind the scenes” format.
Attending Fashion Shows/Backstage Access
I had the awesome opportunity to attend some great shows this time around. I was so excited to get to see the Milly Show because Milly has been a longtime favorite of mine. It was funny because the seats were all first come, first serve, so there was a free for all when everyone was let in to get the best seats. I also had the pleasure of working with Redken to get backstage access to some of the shows they were doing hair and makeup for, including BCBG, Linder NYC, Nicole Miller, and Taoray Wang.
Visiting Showrooms/Brands
One of the essential parts of Fashion Week is meeting with brands and going to showrooms visits for brands you work with or would like to work with. This gives you a personal touch to someone you may have been talking with only over email and you can put a face to the name. It also gives you a behind the scenes look at how a showroom works and you get to see some styles in person that you would otherwise just being seeing on your computer. We had a great showroom visit with Eliza J and wanted to steal the little dog that was in attendance.
Getting New Content
This is probably my favorite part about traveling — getting new content for pictures. I love scouting out locations and making lists of places to shoot pictures for compelling content. I’ve really taken a liking to the location scouting aspect. Before we go on a trip I have an extensive process that I do in trying to find the best places and vantage points to take pictures from. I save hundreds of inspiration pictures and make out a schedule for where we will be going and what types of pictures we need to shoot. I think the love of this comes from my natural enjoyment of being a tourist and traveler. I was doing this long before blogging came around and I think it’s been really fun segwaying that into creating content for the blog.
Dealing with Hurdles
Like I said above, it rained almost the entire time that we were in NYC. It was also freezing cold, so it was a cold and wet rain that fell during our trip. It wasn’t the most ideal situation for traipsing around the city and taking pictures, but you just have to make the best of it. We bought a couple of different umbrellas to have some variety in our pictures … and I made sure to pack a lot of hats because I already knew my hair was going to be a mess.
Overall, we had a great time this Fashion Week and I can’t wait to do it all over again in September!
