When I started this blog about 10 years ago staged pictures weren’t really a thing in the blogging world. Most people had horrible saved images from google as the meat of their posts and if they had any pictures at all, they were horrible mirror pictures or tripod photos. One of my favorite parts about blogging in this current time is how creative bloggers and people on IG get with their pictures. I absolutely love location scouting and before I go on a trip I usually already have a list of at least 10-20 places that I want to take pictures. I’ve compiled 5 of my top location scouting tips to share with you all today!
One– Location Tags: I like to search in the IG feature “places” where you can type in locations and places and it will pull up anyone else who’s tagged a photo there. This helps me see where other people have taken pictures at this location and can also spark ideas when you see different areas of the place or space that you didn’t know about before. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found a little hidden nugget by seeing something on the location search before a photoshoot.
Two– Drive Around Aimlessly: the other day I was looking for a stretch of sidewalk that was next to some pink flowers. I literally drove around for 30-40 minutes just going through neighborhoods looking for this idea that I had in my head. I did the same thing when I was looking for a flower field in the Memphis area. Sometimes you just have to get in your car and drive around- you never know what you might find!
Three– Hashtags: In addition to searching location tags, I really like to search hashtags as well. Say for instance you are looking for a graffiti wall in Miami, simply search for hashtag “miamigraffitiwall” or “miamistreetart” and you will see any photos that have been tagged with that hashtag. I have also found a lot of locations by searching for random things in hashtags.
Four– Photographers: This one seems like a no brainer, but follow a lot of photographers on instagram because this is their job! Photographers are constantly scouting for locations for photoshoots and have an endless supply of favorites and if you just either ask or follow them on IG you can see where they like to shoot and then you can check out the locations yourself.
Five– Be Adventurous: Okay, so sometimes you just have to be a little crazy to get the perfect shot. If that means trespassing to get on a rooftop or maybe running out in the middle of the road to get a taxi shot in NYC, just do it! Not saying I’ve done any of those things or anything 😉 My point is, if you have an idea in your head of a picture that you want, just make it happen.
Do you all have any tips that I need to add to my list?
