I think one of the most common questions that I get asked is if I have tried microneedling and what I think of it- funny story is that I actually got it done when it first started hitting mainstream medspas about 4-5 years ago. I don’t really remember ever leaving the place I went with red skin and really didn’t think it did much.
I had been wanting to try it again since the technology has improved in the past 5 years. I recently went to La Bella Skin Bar in Germantown, TN to get their “luxe facial” which includes a session of microneedling and an intraceuticals oxygen treatment. I was excited to get this done by their aesthetician Kate Umsted who also does a variety of other things at the spa such as facials, spray tans and lash extensions.
Most people are familiar with microneedling, but if you aren’t, it’s basically like dermarolling on steriods. A microneedling pen is guided over your skin which produces micro-injuries to your skin, producing collagen and elastin and helping products penetrate deeper. Your skin is left red, sometimes bleeding (but it’s a good bleeding), and will reveal glowing and plumped skin in a few days after the treatment.
The first step to the microneedling process is to cleanse the skin and apply a topical numbing cream, which is then cleansed off three times to assure all of the numbing cream is off of your face. You can see the cleansing and numbing process above in the photos in the beginning of this post.
Now let’s get to the good stuff- the actual needling process. Everyone’s first question with any procedure that I get is, “did it hurt?” The answer to that one is no, it didn’t hurt at all really. Your face is pretty numb and it just feels like someone is gently scraping something across your face. The only area where it feels uncomfortable is your forehead because that area of your face has the least amount of fat and cushioning.
The whole microneedling process takes around 30 minutes to complete. My face was pretty red, but I told Kate that I like things really aggressive, so she complied with my request 🙂 When she finished the microneedling treatment we moved on to my Intraceuticals infusion treatment where oxygen is used to help push hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and vitamins A,C, & E deep into the dermis of your skin. I got several of these Intraceuticals treatments before my wedding and they are amazing. The Intraceuticals treatments are perfect to pair with a microneedling session because your skin is open and the infusion will penetrate so much deeper than if you were to just get it on its own.
This is my skin before, during, and after the luxe facial with microneedling and oxygen therapy.
It is now almost a week from the time that I got the treatment and my face is finishing up peeling. On the second and third day your face is a little red in some areas, but nothing you can’t cover up with makeup. My face didn’t start peeling until the third day and now on the fifth day it’s finally finishing up peeling. It is recommended that you get a package of 4 microneedling sessions to see the best results. I feel like La Bella Skin Bar has a pretty good package for the sessions and you get a discounted rate on microneedling maintenance for life!
